AU The Borg Sphere has opened a temporal vortex into Earth's past, to 2063, a day before First Contact with the Vulcans. The Enterprise crew have to fight a battle with Borg and ensure Zefram Cochrane completes his warp flight. But it soon becomes apparent something is very wrong, or right.
Starfleet has just been inaugurated, set to design and build new classes of exploratory starships. But they're going at a snail's pace, and a private businessman, tired of the lack of progress, takes the law into his own hands. With that one change, their future is safe, especially when the Xindi war starts.
Sequel to The Ugliness of Things. Malcolm asks for a leave of absence to get reassessed by Starfleet in San Francisco. On his way there, however, the transport on which he is travelling is attacked and he finds himself stranded on a planet with other survivors. This story is complete in itself but is intricately linked with The Ugliness of Things, to which it often refers.
A unexpected meeting changes the Enterprise crew in ways they'd never imagined. Title taken from Mae West's quote: "You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough."
